GEA Expands Ammonia Portfolio with Smaller Semi-Hermetic Screw Compressors

German manufacturer Gea Heating & Refrigeration Technologies is expanding its ammonia product portfolio, adding two screw CompaX compressors and a brand-new Grasso X semi-hermetic screw compressor package.

“The[se] compact, safe and reliable products, in combination with their high efficiency, lead to reduced total costs and a most sustainable solution,” said Ron Hoffmann, Product Manager for screw compressors at GEA. “We are happy to bring over 50 years of expertise in the development and production of screw compressors to the market with our proven and new products.”

GEA CompaX ammonia compressors

The new semi-hermetic ammonia screw compressors, the GEA CompaX 350 and CompaX 400, will be launched in the coming month, and have flow volumes of 321 and 372 m³/h at 2,940rpm, expanding the range from larger capacities to medium and smaller ones as well. They have a wide speed range and stepless adjustable internal volume ratio.

“The compact design and the simultaneously high degree of integration makes the CompaX a cost-efficient and space-saving product,” GEA said.

The CompaX 350 and 400 models will be available as both compressor packages and chillers, at least in the introductory phase, according to a statement from GEA.

GEA Grasso X compressor package

The brand-new GEA Grasso X semi-hermetic ammonia screw compressor package is available as single or multi package, offering “maximum flexibility and efficiency with a minimum footprint and overall cost.”

The multi packages can be configured with two, three or four identical CompaX 350 or 400 units in parallel arrangements. This flexibility provides cooling capacities from approximately 200kW to 1,900kW at -10/35°C (57TR to 540TR at 14/95°F).

“Combined with the wide speed range of each screw compressor, the GEA Grasso X setup provides industry-leading availability, redundancy and efficiencies at the highest level over nearly the entire full and part load range,” according to GEA.

The BluX ammonia chiller

GEA has also introduced an updated version of its existing BluX ammonia chiller, featuring “major technical enhancements” to the semi-hermetic screw compressors. The BluX is “ideal” for air conditioning systems, according to GEA, and with the new CompaX 350 and 400 screw compressors, it can cover smaller capacity requirements than before.

With inlet and outlet temperatures of 12/6°C (53.6/43°F), and condensing at ambient temperatures (35°C/95°F), the capacity range now extends from approximately 350kW cooling capacity with 1x CompaX 350 compressor running at at 3,000rpm up to approximately 1,530kW with 2x CompaX 400 at 6,000rpm. Larger capacities than the above can be covered by the GEA BluX with the existing CompaX 700 and 900 ammonia screw compressors.
