Tbilisi meeting on implementation of HCFC phase-out management plans and HFC phase-down initiatives under the Kigali Amendment

National Ozone Officers, Climate Focal points and Refrigeration Experts from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova (Republic of), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, representatives of the Ozone Secretariat and the implementing agencies UN Environment and UNIDO participate in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) thematic meeting on HCFC phase-out management plans and HFCs phase-down initiatives in Tbilisi from 24-26 October 2017.

AMOLEA 1224yd, New Refrigerant with Lower Environmental Impact, Acquires International Certification

AGC Asahi Glass (AGC), a world-leading manufacturer of glass, chemicals and high-tech materials, announces that it has obtained certification for AMOLEA 1224yd, a new refrigerant with a lower environmental impact. The certification was granted in October 2017 by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), marking the first time for a Japanese company to obtain approval for a new chemical substance. AGC intends to begin commercial production of AMOLEA 1224yd in early 2018, and will continue to increase capacity in line with demand growth.

Europe: focus on the consumption, exports, production and destruction of ozone depleting substances

The European Environment Agency (EAA) published in September 2017 a report entitled Ozone-depleting substances 2016. The report summarises the data reported by European companies in accordance with the Ozone depleting substances (ODS) Regulation for 2016 and looks at the major trends since 2006. The substances concerned are those of controlled by the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer — chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, carbon tetrachloride (CTC), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrobromofluorocarbons (HBFCs), bromochloromethane (BCM) and methyl bromide (MB).

During a meeting on 7 October in Vladivostok, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Working Group SC61C – formed to update the international standard for commercial refrigeration, IEC 60335-2-89 – agreed to finalize its work and advance the draft amendment (committee draft for vote; CDV) for public comments.
